The organisers of the 10th annual International Documentary and Short Film Festival DokuFest (Prizren, 23-31 July 2011) made sure to offer their audiences a choice of approximately 200 films from 55 different countries, as well as access to a large number of filmmakers from the region and the world.

The city of Prizren in Kosovo was the international capital of documentary and short films for a week this summer. More than 170 film directors from the U.S., Serbia, Turkey, the Philippines, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Germany, Sweden, Denmark and a number of other countries as well as local cineastes attended the ninth International Festival of Documentary and Short Films - Dokufest.

The first ever film festival in Kosovo was held in autumn 2009. It managed to attract a number of film artists from both the region and abroad. The Pri Film Fest took place in Pristina from Sept. 22 to 30, screening a total of twenty five movies and boasting a jury headed by British actress Vanessa Redgrave.

Arta Dobroshi is one of Kosovo’s most talented young actresses, who has gained the opportunity to pursue a career abroad. Last year her efforts were rewarded, as she achieved international success and won critical acclaim for her role in “Lorna’s Silence,” which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008.

How often does the international public get to see a film produced from Kosovo? For the film enthusiast interested in “Southeast European cinema” a search for films from Kosovo on the internet doesn’t always generate the most satisfying of results. “Kosovo” is more often associated articles on “violence”, “country status”, “independence” and “succession”. The few links that actually lead to film productions from the area present films about Kosovo from an outsider’s perspective rather than discussing films that have actually been produced within the region.
