For six years now, Podgorica’s AVIFest has been Montenegro’s single venue for gathering domestic and foreign independent filmmakers with the aim of promoting the short film.

“Short films have been and will be the foundation for independent filmmaking. They have no need to colour reality, they represent it as it is. They are films made out of necessity, not made-to-order,” Zoran Bojović, the director and co-founder of the AVIFest, told Southeast Europe: People and Culture.

The second edition of the Telekom UnderhillFest, an international documentary film festival, showed that the audiences in Montenegro have a special interest in the unique world of creative documentary films. “I believe that the audiences of this year’s and last year’s UnderhillFest feel the beauty and the simplicity in this kind of film, which is a different form of narration and emotion than that of a classic documentary or feature film, which cannot be compared with creative documentaries,” said Anđelka Nenezić, the director of UnderhillFest, in an interview for Southeast Europe: People and Culture.

Marija Perović is the first internationally renowned woman film and TV director from Montenegro. Her film debut Packing the Monkeys, Again (2004) was the first film to be shot in Montenegro after a 12 year break. Her second feature film Look at Me was the most popular film in cinemas around Montenegro in 2009.

Licentious photos and "forbidden" video clips on mobile telephones recently brought Montenegrin movie and stage director Nikola Vuk?ević to the limelight. These two ubiquitous things are the main subject of his latest play called "Instant Sexual Education," a story about falling in love for the first time and what comes after that - growing up - a process that carries the same problems everywhere in today's globalized world.
