BANJALUKA KEEPS UP THE TRADITION OF ANIMATED FILM FESTIVALS

Among its versatile selection, this year’s Banjaluka International Animated Film Festival put a special emphasis on works from the UK, showcasing both a contemporary and children’s selection. A special guest of the event was British animator Phil Malloy, whose films yet again prove that ‘cartoons’ are not just for children, but can touch upon serious topics as well.

MARIJA DŽIDŽEVA: THE SEARCH FOR HOPE

Young Macedonian director Marija Džidževa first hit it big in her home country with the documentary The List of Toni Mandža (2004), about a young man from a small town who escapes prisons and goes on a killing spree with a hit list in his pocket. The film was said to be the first ever Macedonian documentary to have pirated copies sold throughout the country. She recently completed her part in the ex-Yugoslavian collaborative project Some Other Stories. She talked to Southeast Europe: People and Culture about her recent and current projects.

ZAGREB FILM FESTIVAL DRAWS MORE VISITORS THAN EVER

Zagreb’s ninth annual film festival managed to attract nearly 27,000 viewers – a feat that has made it one of the few film festivals in the country with more visitors than in 2010. The eight-day event featured some 100 script writers, actors and other movie professionals from around the world.

IVAN RAMADAN: ARCHITECT AND ANIMATOR

After garnering significant recognition at home, Kiyamet (2011), the latest animated achievement from the young Sarajevo artist Ivan Ramadan, will be shown at least six more festivals in the upcoming months. The 26-year-old architecture student has already shown Kiyamet at this year's 17th annual Sarajevo Film Festival, and won the Silver Tape Grand Prix at the Srebrenica Short Film Festival.

Take the team from Makedox, the documentary film festival that took place in June 2011 in Skopje,  put them in a van with a few tents, and a portable movie screen, and what happens is Makedox travelling cinema, the second chapter of Macedonia's only documentary film festival. Makedox took place in August, screening films in six villages and small cities: Lazaropole, Vevčani, Kavadarci, Gevgelija, Štip and Vinica.

SHORT AND INDEPENDENT: AVI FILM FEST IN PODGORICA

For six years now, Podgorica’s AVIFest has been Montenegro’s single venue for gathering domestic and foreign independent filmmakers with the aim of promoting the short film.

“Short films have been and will be the foundation for independent filmmaking. They have no need to colour reality, they represent it as it is. They are films made out of necessity, not made-to-order,” Zoran Bojović, the director and co-founder of the AVIFest, told Southeast Europe: People and Culture.

FILMS UNDER THE HILL

The second edition of the Telekom UnderhillFest, an international documentary film festival, showed that the audiences in Montenegro have a special interest in the unique world of creative documentary films. “I believe that the audiences of this year’s and last year’s UnderhillFest feel the beauty and the simplicity in this kind of film, which is a different form of narration and emotion than that of a classic documentary or feature film, which cannot be compared with creative documentaries,” said Anđelka Nenezić, the director of UnderhillFest, in an interview for Southeast Europe: People and Culture.

VLADIMIR BLAZEVSKI: HANDS REMEMBER THE TRADE
