NOVEMBER 2011 – SOUTHEAST EUROPE: PEOPLE AND CULTURE

Welcome to the November newsletter edition of Southeast Europe: People and Culture!

Our series of cultural events ended this month with author readings at Buch Wien literature fair in Vienna, Austria and dance performances at the Euro-Scene Festival of contemporary European theatre in Leipzig, Germany.

We hope that those of you who joined us there or in one of the earlier events in the Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Finland or the United Kingdom enjoyed yourselves and got inspired by the creativity, variety and dynamism of Southeast European culture.

THIS MONTH’S NEW FEATURES

This month we invite you to find out more about the popular Montenegrin alternative rock band Autogeni Trening and their new  music video. We introduce you also to Ivan Ramadan, an awarded animator from Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The video of the month takes us to Croatia's capital Zagreb, where we visit the Museum of Broken Relationships – winner of the European Cultural Foundation’s 2011 award for most innovative museum.

   Rock like a Volkswagen Beetle
Montenegro: 24 November 2011

Founded 11 years ago, the Montenegrin alternative music band  Autogeni Trening (Autogenic Training) recently published its third album. For many people, playing alternative music in Montenegro sounds like a demanding undertaking but as far as the band’s drummer, Bojan Bojanić, is concerned it is like "driving a Volkswagen beetle that uses up a lot of petrol and breaks down quite often, but you do it because you love it."

  Ivan Ramadan: Architect and Animator
Bosnia and Herzegovina: 7 November 2011

Ivan Ramadan, a 26-year-old architecture student from Sarajevo, has created numerous prize-winning animated films screened at festivals worldwide, including in the U.S., Japan and South Africa. "For me, animation and architecture have become connected and can co-exist,” says the artist. “Both are important visual arts, and the way of thinking I acquired through architecture has helped me in animation."

WHAT’S ON

International Documentary Film Festival on Human Rights, Pristina, Kosovo*

The International Documentary Film Festival on Human Rights “ONE WORLD” aims at promoting human rights, freedoms and democracy. This year's edition will take place in Pristina from 12-16 December. In addition to films, the festival will feature debates on human rights, civil society, foreign policy, environmental policy, and like.
