Welcome to the fifth newsletter edition of Southeast Europe: People and Culture!

The cultural diversity of Southeast Europe is rich and inviting; and that is exactly what we are celebrating in this newsletter edition of Southeast Europe: People and Culture!

In this month’s new feature section we focus on Southeast Europe as a rendezvous for people and cultures from around the world. Our featured contributor for this month, Rudina Hoxha from Albania, interviewed a German chef who is living and working in Tirana. Keep an eye out for monthly profiles of our regular contributors and get to know the people behind the stories.

Our other feature for this month gives you a glimpse at a cross-cultural exhibition, Obsession, which showcased the work of artists from Southeast Europe in London.

 Chefs without borders - Tirana, Albania: October 2009
Falk Gnauck, a native of Rammenau, Germany, brought a sharp imagination, specific cooking skills and a precise way of doing things to Albania. This has helped him make a name for himself among the hotel chefs in Albania, where he has been working for three and a half years.

One interesting secret is that the recipes are passed from one generation to the other by mothers and grandmothers who have enriched these recipes with new elements over the years.

 Memory, Identity and Obsession - Balkan Art on show in London - London, United Kingdom: October 2009
An exhibition put on by the Balkan art organisation Terminal/oo/ in London brought together the work of five artists on the theme ‘Obsession’. Looking at three artists in particular – Radenko Milak (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Jelena Telecki (Serbia and Australia), and Verica Kovačevska (the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, currently based in Switzerland) – provides an interesting opportunity to consider the notion of obsession as it cuts through layers of human experience, from the personal to the historical.

With a line-up that includes the James Carter Quintet (USA), Aki Takase (Germany) and Chico Pinheiro E Banda (Brazil), the Skopje Jazz Festival is bringing some of the best international jazz artists to Southeast Europe.

Every October children from a number of European countries gather in Belgrade. They dance, sing, act and, most of all, spend time together and have lots of fun. 2009 marks the 40th anniversary of the International Meeting of the Children of Europe.
