Some of Southeast Europe’s most exciting creative talents in the fields of music, film, literature and
gastronomy toured through Germany and Austria in March. Audiences were given a chance to see them
live in Nuremberg (17 – 19 March), Passau (19 – 22 March), Linz (23 -25 March) and Salzburg (26 – 28 March).
In Germany, the Boban and Marko Markovic Orchestar (Serbia) performed the best of traditional Balkan Brass Band sounds, while Balkan BeatsDJ Robert Soko (Bosnia and Herzegovina) offered a contemporary take on the region’s music. Film fans got the chance to watch the Golden Bear winning Grbavica (by Jasmila Žbanic, Bosnia and Herzegovina, 2006) and meet the internationally acclaimed Albanian director Kujtim Çashku, who discussed his work at the screening of the film "The Magic Eye". Literature enthusiasts heard Serbian writer Dragan Velikic read excerpts from his award-winning novels. All this and more offered a unique opportunity to share in the rich and vibrant culture of Southeast Europe. For details, check out the city-specific programme.
In Austria, music lovers enjoyed Toni Kitanovski & Cherkezi Orchestra (the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia), an explosive combination of classically trained jazz musicians and Roma-style wedding band. DANICA, a Salzburg-based group of musicians from the Western Balkans, played traditional music from Southeast Europe. There was also a chance to hear some of Southeast Europe's most critically acclaimed writers reading excerpts from their books and talking about their work. And in a true feast for the senses, delicious Croatian cuisine was served in the company of one of the country’s most talked-about filmmakers, Ognjen Svilicic.
